Summary

The three-part series, The CHEER Hub: A New Approach to Coastal Resilience, delved into different aspects of the Hub’s research approach and its partnership with NHERI.

Since 2017, the NSF-funded Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) has produced DesignSafe Radio, a bi-weekly podcast that highlights innovations in this area of research and how scientists are working towards making society more resilient.

This September, the podcast featured CHEER’s PI, Rachel Davidson, in a three-part series called The CHEER Hub: A New Approach to Coastal Resilience that discusses the Hub’s research and the computational framework it is developing.

Episode #1 (September 3, 2024) – An Introduction to the CHEER Hub

In the first episode of this series, Davidson introduces CHEER and explains why so many good ideas for managing disaster risks are not successfully implemented.

Episode #2 (September 17, 2024) – STARR Software Framework

The second episode of this series delves into the partnership between CHEER and NHERI. It focuses on their collaboration in developing a software framework called Stakeholder-based Tool for the Analysis of Regional Risk (STARR), the Hub’s dynamic computational tool meant to support policy design.

Episode #3 (October 1, 2024) – Decision-Making in Disaster Risk Models

In the third and final episode of this series, Davidson details how stakeholders in CHEER’s case study areas (Port Arthur, TX; Houston, TX; Eastern North Carolina), have different, reasonable, and conflicting goals. She goes on to discuss the Hub’s new approach to building a sustainable disaster risk management system in the U.S.
