Nelson is a first-year Ph.D. student in Integrated Coastal Science at East Carolina University (ECU). He holds a Master’s degree in Geography. His research interest includes the application of mixed methods approaches such as qualitative and geospatial methods, to answer contemporary disaster questions. During his master’s program at ECU, he worked as a research assistant (RA) under the supervision of Dr. Anuradha Mukherji on the NOAA-funded project titled “Preparing for, responding to, compound coastal hazards in eastern North Carolina.” As a RA, he conducted qualitative coding on acquired datasets from stakeholders’ focused group discussions.
As a Ph.D. student, he will be working under the supervision of Drs. Meghan Millea and Jamie Kruse, where he aims to develop complex methodological approaches to examine the economic and health impacts of disasters on vulnerable populations.
